Zelma Steelman Long

Mrs. Zelma Steelman Long passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at the Hospice & Palliative Care Center. She was born on July 25, 1920 to the late Marshall and Dina Long Steelman of Yadkin County. A gifted athlete, Mrs. Long joined the Hanes Company in Winston-Salem after graduation where she was recruited to play basketball on the Company team. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Reid Long and brothers, Allen, Davis, and Woodrow Steelman. Surviving family include a son, Clifton Reid (Skip) Long, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Winston-Salem, a daughter, Marsha Long Paulsen of Chapel Hill, and three grandchildren: Clifton Reid Long III of Nashville, TN; Elizabeth Clark Long of Raleigh; and Blair Trowbridge Paulsen of Wrightsville Beach, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Long was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was an avid gardener, a wonderful cook, a lover of nature, and a devoted mother and grandmother who loved nothing more than spending time with her family. Everyone who knew her will miss her ready smile and caring spirit. The family would like to express thanks and sincere appreciation to the wonderful staff at Home Instead, The Elms at Tanglewood, and at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem for the loving care they showed Zelma. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 9, at 11 am at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem. It will be followed by a graveside service at Longtown United Methodist Church in Yadkin County. The family will receive friends today, Tuesday, February 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller. Memorial gifts in Mrs. Long's memory may be made to the Hospice & Palliative Care Center or Trinity United Methodist Church.
