Zane Gray Jackson

Zane Gray Jackson, 84, of East Bend died Wednesday November 23, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem, NC after a short illness. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, November 26 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, November 27 at 2:00 pm at Unity Moravian Church, 8300 Concord Church Road, Lewisville, NC 27023. The Rev. Stuart Zimmerman and the Rt. Rev. Graham Rights will officiate. Burial will follow in God's Acre at Freidberg Moravian Church. . He was born January 12, 1927 in Forsyth County to the late Zebedee Jackson and Bertha Wallace Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School and Draughon Business School. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corp from December 1944 to July 1946 during World War II. He retired as a Director of Consumer Credit Counseling Service after 21 years of service. As Executive Director, the Winston Salem Agency won multiple national ‘Most Outstanding Agency' awards and was recognized for their educational programs. The Rotary Club of Windsor, Ontario awarded him the ""Paul Harris Fellow"" for his educational work in Canada & the United States. He was an active member of Unity Moravian Church having served as an Elder and a Trustee. He also served on the Central Board of Elders for the Southern Province of the Moravian Church in America. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Reich Jackson. Survivors include his devoted wife, Nancy Lutz Jackson, daughter, Julie Jackson Hughes, and granddaughter, Mary Jordan Hughes. He is additionally survived by his sister, Geraldine Jackson Jones of Stokesdale, and two brothers, H. Zebedee (Red) Jackson (Vickie) of Lewisville and J. Wesley Jackson (Ruth) of Emerald Isle. Also surviving is a mother in-law, stepdaughter, three stepsons and their spouses, seven precious step grandchildren who loved him as ""Papa Jack"", and a host of nieces and nephews. Gray enjoyed the fullness and meaning of life through his family, community, country, and Christian values. He showed the grace of love for family and cherished all the time spent with his loving grandchildren which included joking, wrestling, playing board games, and offering ""knuckle"" sandwiches. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27023 or Sunnyside Ministries, 319 Haled Street, Winston-Salem, NC, 27127 or charity of choice.
