Wilson "Bill" Morrell Comer

Wilson ""Bill"" Morrell Comer of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones on July 9, 2014. He was born in Grayson County, Va., to Thomas Rutledge Comer, Sr. and Ellen Easter Comer on March 19, 1928. He spent his early childhood in southwest Virginia before moving with his parents and siblings to Winston-Salem, where he graduated from South Fork High School. He later volunteered to serve in the United States Marine Corps at the end of World War II. He married Carolyn Elizabeth Williams on January 13, 1949. He later served with the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Comer built his career working with Western Electric, retiring from the company after more than 30 years of employment. He also worked as an independent real estate owner and property manager. During his life, Mr. Comer enjoyed several hobbies and interests, including beekeeping, horticulture and carpentry. He helped his father build one home and independently built three homes on neighboring lots in which he, his family and other relatives have lived for more than five decades. He was an avid family genealogist, documenting more than two centuries of his Virginia and North Carolina families. Mr. Comer owned property near his birthplace in southwest Virginia, where several generations of his ancestors are interred. He is survived by his sisters Mary Louisa Talley, Virginia C. Motsinger, Opal C. Walker and brother T.R. Comer, Jr., and four daughters: Mary Comer Mazzeo and husband, Duffy, children, Vincent Willis (Anne) and Duffie Dawn Rogers (Jeff); Vivian Marie Comer and husband, Rickey Greer, children, David Rogers (Amy) and Christina Welch (Rich); Barbara Comer Martin and husband, Joe, children, Angela Norman (Donnie) and Christopher McDaniel (Brittany); and Alice Comer Hill of the home, children, Matthew Comer, Johnathon, Joshua, Adam and Cara Hill; as well as grandchildren Elizabeth Heath (Tony), Suellyn George (Eric) and Morrell Banner (Angela); twenty-eight great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant sibling and sisters, Josephine Laura Comer Thomas, Juanita Mae Comer Kaplan, his daughters, Gwendolyn Elizabeth Comer Ingraham and Susan Comer Banner. He attended First Wesleyan Church and was a member of AMVETS Post 777. The Funeral Service will be conducted 2:00 pm Saturday July 12, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel officiated by Pastor Tommy Albertson. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be conducted following the service at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Friday, July 11 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, 1625 Old Salisbury Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
