Mr. William Clarence Buchanan, Jr., 86, of Winston Salem, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 11, 2021. Bill was born November 4,1934 in Roanoke, VA, to William Clarence Buchanan Sr. and Carma Ownbey Buchanan.
On December 27, 1941, at the age of 7, he and his four siblings entered the Methodist Children’s Home on Reynolda Road, which is now Crossnore School & Children’s Home. Bill remained at the home until his graduation at RJ Reynolds High School in 1953. He attended High Point College and soon married his high-school sweetheart, Barbara Louise Kline. Bill had a long-standing and a successful career as a sales consultant in the banking and security industry.
Bill was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend. Bill had an outgoing personality and never met a stranger. He always stayed in shape by playing racquet ball, playing tennis, jogging, and swimming. For many years, he started his day at the YMCA. He loved to get into the pool before anyone else and get his exercise in before most people were out of bed. He met many friends over the years attending his children’s horse shows and sporting events. He enjoyed friends from the YMCA, The Elks Club, Olde Beau Club, WS Civitan, and Forsyth Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara Louise Kline Buchanan, and brothers; Jackson Lee Buchanan, Early Eugene Buchanan, and Thomas Kyle Buchanan. Bill is survived by three children; William C. (Buck) Buchanan III and wife Donna of Advance, NC, Elizabeth (Beth) Alphin and husband Robert of Winston Salem, NC, Barbara Ellen Helms and husband Mike of Hickory, NC; four grandchildren, William Logan Buchanan (Amanda) of Greensboro, NC, Andrew Shelton Buchanan of Mocksville, NC, Michael Helms of Winston Salem, NC and Brandon Helms of Hickory, NC; one great grandson, Logan Reynolds Buchanan, brother; Donald Buchanan (Dorothy) of Frankfort, KY, brother-in-law; Dr. David Kline (Laura) of Madison, WI, sister-in-law; Jo Ann Buchanan, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
The Buchanan family would like to thank Miss Daisy Caregivers, especially Cary Glover for his outstanding care of our father with such dignity and grace.
