On October 9, 2013, at the young age of 98, Bill White suddenly passed away at his Pfafftown residence. Bill was born March 29, 1915 to J.T. White and Viola Vera Bass White in Montgomery, AL. Bill and his late wife, Jean Morgan White, had been members of the Pfafftown community since 1981 and had previously lived for thirty years in Lafayette, Louisiana where he was an independent petroleum geophysicist/geologist. He was most fortunate to meet Jean in Lexington, Kentucky while majoring in geology at the University of Kentucky on an athletic scholarship and they were happily married for 67 years. During the WWII era, Bill was employed by the US Strategic Mineral Survey, mapping deposits of essential minerals in Kentucky and Tennessee. He later became a well known consulting geologist, discovering numerous oil and gas fields throughout Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Bill was a competitive golfer, knowing and sponsoring several touring pros, and was most instrumental in getting the PGA to have a tournament in Lafayette, a first for the city. During his retirement years here in North Carolina, he developed a passion for landscaping and gardening. Bill leaves a son, James Thomas White and wife Joan of High Point, NC, and a daughter, Barbara Dabbs and husband George of Baton Rouge, LA, five wonderful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His family and friends will miss that warm yet wry smile, twinkle in his eye, and a 'good joke' for all at any occasion. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, at Pfafftown Christian Church Cemetery, Community Church Road, Pfafftown, NC. Any memorial offerings may be directed to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com
