William Whitaker

KERNERSVILLE - William Gray Whitaker, 79, passed away Monday, May 14, 2018 at Kernersville Medical Center. Gray was born on June 20, 1938 in Yadkin County to William Grover and Mary Lee Oliver Whitaker. He was a faithful member of Gospel Light Baptist Church where he was affectionately known as the "Candy Man!" Gray was a hard-working man who never met a stranger. In addition to his parents, Gray was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Whitaker; and one brother. Donald Whitaker. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Jessie Mae Whitaker; two daughters, Debbie Vogt (Gary) and Donna Hicks (Raybon); three sons, Tony Whitaker (Brooke), William Gray Whitaker, Jr. (Janice), and Terry Whitaker; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; a sister, Vonda Nelson (Melvin); a brother, Kenneth Whitaker (Linda); and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Gospel Light Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Shumate officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 12:45 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service at church.
