William Curtis Sides, Sr.

William Curtis Sides, Sr. entered the more immediate presence of His Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. He was the second child of Robert Eli and Flossie Ann Teague Sides, born in Winston-Salem on May 10, 1914. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Mary Snyder and Edith Kinnaman, and his brother Kenneth Sides. Bill is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Frances Transou Sides, sons William C. Sides, Jr. (wife Dawn) of Clemmons and Richard L. Sides (wife Elizabeth) of Winston-Salem, daughter Cathy S. Roberts (husband Terry) of Lewisville, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Roberta Renigar and Margie Teague, and brother Robert E. Sides, Jr., along with numerous nieces and nephews. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 17th Base Post Office Unit, setting up the mail service for the troops in Europe. When Bill came home to Winston-Salem, he returned to employment in the US Postal Service as a mail carrier, station supervisor, and in postal administration, where he worked until he retired in 1975. Bill will be remembered for his devotion to family, his kind generosity, an enjoyment of sports, his keen sense of humor and his love of growing things in the garden - especially tomatoes! He has been a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church since 1955. There he served as a member of the Board of Trustees, Head Usher, and Sunday School Class President. The funeral service will be conducted by the Reverend Dr. Worth Green and the Reverend Dr. David Marcus in the Sanctuary of New Philadelphia at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 3 and the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. The family expresses special thanks to Niki Moffett, CNA, for her loving care and support of Bill during his last months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27104 or to The Kitchen Fund, Laurel Ridge Moravian Camp, 124 Pendry Drive, Laurel Springs, N.C. 28644.
