William 'Johnny' Self

William ""Johnny"" Self, 66, of Vass, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013 at the Pine Lake Nursing Home in Carthage, North Carolina. Johnny was preceded in death by his mother, Janet Self; his father, Willard Self; and his sister, Patricia Lewis. Johnny is survived by his nephew John ""Rusty"" Bates, and his wife, Beth Bates and their 2 children, of Winston Salem; cousin, John Via and wife Suzanne Via and their 6 children of Cameron, NC. Johnny was born Sept. 8, 1947, in Guilford County, the son of Willard and Janet Self. He was one of two children. He was a member of Open Arms Community Church in Vass, NC. He attended the SUCCEED program at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst NC from 2007 - 2012. Johnny loved the Lord, Elvis and the outdoors. He had worked at the Baptist Hospital in the 70s as a kitchen worker. He had a kind heart and a contagious laugh. He will be missed by all that knew him. A graveside service will be held 1 pm, Saturday Sept. 21, 2013 in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery, in Winston Salem, with the Pastor John Brown officiating. The family will speak to guests at the cemetery. A Memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at Open Arms Community Church, at 244 South Street in Vass, NC. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the SUCCEED Class of Sandhills Community College, in memorial for William ""Johnny"" Self, 3395 Airport Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
