William Steven Rivers

On November 28, 2009, William Steven ""Steve"" Rivers went to join the love of his life Brenda Phelps Rivers in heaven. He was born November 5, 1948 in Forsyth County, to the late William and Myrtle Rivers. Steve is survived by his daughter, Vickie Lynn Rivers; his son, Robert Steven Rivers; his sister, Margie Zimmerman, all of Winston-Salem; his brother, Richard (Jo) Rivers of Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; both parents; one brother, Ernest Rivers; and one sister, Janette Rivers. Steve attended East Forsyth High School until joining the Army. In 1968, he was a member of Company B Sixth Battalion Second Brigade. He received the Bronze Star on March 15, 1971 for serving in Vietnam, classified as Specialist Five William S. Rivers. He was honorably discharged on May 1, 1974. He worked for Sunoco Corrflex starting in 1972 where he worked as a corrugation operator and developed many close friendships. A memorial service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Friday, December 4, 2009 at Glory Road Baptist Church with Rev. Charles H. Whitaker officiating. Inurnment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park with military rites provided by the VFW Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. He was a big Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan so in lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to The Dale Earnhardt Foundation, 1675 Dale Earnhardt Highway #3, Mooresville, NC 28115.
