William Orrison

William “Mike” Orrison, 76, of Kernersville, NC formerly of Lacon, IL passed away on July 31, 2021 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.  He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in June of this year.  He was born June 3, 1945 in Peoria, IL to Bill and Eleanor Orrison.  He married his wife, Jeanne, on November 25, 1967.

After graduating from Illinois State University where he was a two-time NCAA All American in golf, he worked as a golf pro at a country club for 2 years.  He then moved to Lacon, IL where he taught high school business at Mid-County/Midland High School for 32 years.  He coached basketball, softball, and golf with many of his teams advancing to the state level.  During this time, he also managed the Lacon Country Club for 4 years.  In 2000, Mike moved to Kernersville, NC where he taught science and coached basketball and golf at Kernersville Middle School for 10 years.

Mike was involved in sports and music all his life.  He was an outstanding athlete in baseball, basketball, and golf.  He was a member of the Illinois State University Athletics Hall of Fame, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and Illinois Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame.   He was the Lacon Country Club champion 9 times, shooting a personal best 27 on 9 holes.  He coached in the summer softball league 12 years.  He was a member of the Pine Knolls Men’s Golf Association serving as Treasurer for 20 years.  Mike played the keyboard, trumpet, and sang in several bands for 30 years.

Mike was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend.  Mike’s parents and brother preceded him in death.  Mike is survived by his loving wife Jeanne of 53 years; daughter Susan (Jamie) Piotrowski of Kernersville, NC; daughter Julie (John) Setlak of Cary, NC.  He was the proud grandfather of Emily & Sarah Piotrowski and Allison & Megan Setlak all of NC.

Funeral services for Mike will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Rev. Justin Lowe officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Gur Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
