Mr. William Howard Oates, 88, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born January 9, 1923 in Timmonsville, SC to Willie Rudolph and Fannie Elizabeth Burgess Oates. Mr. Oates was retired from Hanes Corp. with 41 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He was a member of VFW Post 1134, American Legion Post 0055 and the Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lyde Oates; and a step sister, Christine Elizabeth Oates Moore. Surviving are his wife, Mary Marie Oates of Winston-Salem; step daughters, Marcia (Rodney) Scott of Winston-Salem, and Susan E. Oates; a son, Ronald S. Oates; two grandchildren, Alisha Michelle Scott and Joseph Alexander Scott. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 7 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park with military rites. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
