William Reid Nunn, Jr.

William Reid Nunn Jr., 90, of Bermuda Run passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 22, 2017, at the Bermuda Village Health Center. His faithful daughter, Daughn, and loving nurse, Krystal, were at his bedside. He was born October 15, 1926, in Winston-Salem, to the late William Reid and Nell Hazel Jessup Nunn. He graduated from Hanes High School in 1945 at which time he served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He began his business career in 1947 at Hanes Knitwear and spent the next 40 years in various capacities at Hanes until his retirement in 1987 as the Vice President of Manufacturing Services. William Reid Nunn, Jr., was known by many names. To his co-workers and golfing partners, he was known as ""Bill,"" to the Nunn family members as ""Will Reid,"" and to his classmates, he was also known by the nicknames, ""Percy,"" and ""Pezer."" However, his most favorite nickname was ""Papa,"" as he was called by his grandchildren. Bill loved sports both as an athlete, coach and a fan. He excelled as an athlete at Hanes High School as a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams, the latter two of which won State Championships. He later played for the Shaw Army Air Corps baseball team while in the service and then for many Hanes Knitwear teams. He coached many baseball teams for Winston-Salem National Little League. Bill married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Erleen Hall, in 1947, and remained married for 57 years until Erleen's passing in 2004. They were members of the Winston-Salem Elks Club, The Deacon Club, Bermuda Run Country Club, and the Olympic Club. They enjoyed their biannual trips to Myrtle Beach. Bill was a loving and dedicated father to his two children, Gordon and Daughn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Erleen Hall Nunn. He is survived by his sister, Eloise Gordon Masche, of Bermuda Run; his son, Gordon Reid Nunn, of Pittsburgh; his daughter, Daughn Nunn Eagan, and her husband, David, of Winston-Salem, and two grandchildren, Christopher William Eagan and Kerry Elizabeth Eagan. He is also survived by his niece, Donna Williams, and nephew, Keith Gordon, and his wife, Pandora Gordon; grand nephew, Alex Williams; grand nieces, Ashley Williams and Laura Williams Mussell and her husband, Matt, along with their daughter, Madeline. The family is extremely grateful for the love and care he received by the staff members of Bermuda Village Health Center and Greystone Cottage. A graveside service for Mr. Nunn will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Forsyth Memorial Park, 3771 Yadkinville Road, Winston-Salem, NC, 27106.
