Mr. William Dunn Martin, Jr. 89, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022. He was born in Wake County on February 28, 1933, to the late Mr. William Dunn Martin, Sr, and Ruth Gardner Martin. Bill served in the US Army from 1953 -1955. Bill was a proud graduate of Wake Forest University in 1959, received his MBA from George Washington University in 1971 and graduated from Harvard's Advanced Management Program in 1974. Bill had a distinguished 30-year career at the U.S. Government Accountability Office in Washington, D.C. serving as an Assistant Director of Audits, The Director of the Denver Regional Office, the Deputy Director of Field Operations, and retiring in 1988 as the Director of Internal Audit. He went on to a second career at Cotton and Company, a Certified Public Accounting firm in Alexandria, VA, where he developed a recognized expertise in Risk Management and Internal Controls. With that expertise, Bill wrote a seminal training manual on Fundamentals of Internal Control and worked for many years with Management Concepts, Inc. of Vienna, VA, teaching a course based on that manual, as well as consulting with numerous federal agencies. Bill “Papa” loved his family and was especially proud of his five grandchildren. Besides his family, his other passion was golf and he proudly served as the President of Springfield Golf and Country Club, 1989-1990 (Springfield, VA) and the President of Bermuda Run Country Club, 2013-2014 (Bermuda Run, NC). Bill is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carolyn C. Martin of Advance, NC; two daughters, Ann DiGioia (Steve) of Cornelius, NC, and Lynn Burkett (Tom) of Marion, VA; five grandchildren, Sarah Ulrich (Andrew), Grace DiGioia, Caroline, Tommy, and Will Burkett. He was predeceased by his sister, Clara Anne Phillips, and is survived by her two sons, Greg and Brad Phillips, and many more nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday November 12, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance, NC. Bill’s nephew, Pastor Tony Martin, will be officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to be sent to: Special Olympics Virginia, Local Program, 3212 N.
