William Foster Marion

Mr. William Foster Marion, 92, died August 3, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Care Center in Winston-Salem. Born in 1916 in Surry County to Maude Shore Marion and Jack Marion, Mr. Marion was loved and adored by his family and friends. As a young man, he joined the Civil Conservation Corps in 1935 before joining the Army in 1942. A World War II veteran, he served honorably in the African and European Theatres and received the Purple Heart as well as several other distinguished awards. After the war, Mr. Marion had an extensive career as a plumber and appliance repairman working for Foster and Haley Co. in Winston-Salem for more than 30 years before retiring. With a gift for conversation, Mr. Marion enjoyed telling stories of the events in his life and relayed these with great wit and detail. His outgoing personality, sense of humor, and zest for life will be greatly missed. Mr. Marion is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William Marty Marion and Holly Marion, of Winston-Salem; a step-granddaughter Sarah Finman Jones and her husband Stephen J. Jones and a step-great grandson Owen Joseph Jones of Chapel Hill; his brothers and their spouses, Wendell and Imogene Marion, Jimmy and Joanne Marion of Winston-Salem; his sister Ruth Marion McCollum of Reidsville; his brothers-in-law and sisters in-law Bobby and Claudia Brown, Betty and Ray Tesh, and Joe Brown, all of Winston-Salem; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He made many wonderful friends over the years who brightened his life including his neighbor, Betty Anderson of Winston-Salem. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Brown Marion who died in 1981; and his second wife, Kathy Marion who died in 2006. The Family will receive friends on Wednesday, Aug. 5 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. Graveside service will be Thursday, Aug. 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Westlawn Gardens Cemetery, 6135 Ridgecrest Rd., Clemmons. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care Center, and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Hospice, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103
