William Roberton Lewis

KERNERSVILLE-William Roberton Lewis, 81, passed away Monday, September 26, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 4, 1929 in Guilford Co. to the late Clarence and Mattie Clark Lewis. Mr. Lewis attended Guilford Co. Schools and graduated from Sumner High School in Greensboro. He furthered his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bill spent most of his working career managing Hertz Car & Rental in Winston Salem. He was a United States Air Force veteran and was honorably discharged in 1953, and was of the Methodist faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy E. Coggins Lewis who he married on June 8th 1957 at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Winston Salem; a sister, Margie Hurley; brother-in-law, Ralph Hurley and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Lewis. Surviving are his son, Stan H. Lewis of Chapel Hill; his daughter, Lori Anderson and husband, Michael of Belews Creek; brother, Col. Clarence Lewis, Sr. of Panama City, FL; sister, Nancy James and husband, Frank of Greensboro; a special family member and friend, Howard Clark of Greensboro; several nieces and nephews; and was also known as ""Papa Bill"" to many of the foster children who have been placed with his daughter and son-in-law. A Graveside Service will be conducted at 1:30 PM Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at Mt. Gur Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 PM prior to the service at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel.
