William Ray Lackey

Mr. William Ray Lackey, 91, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born February 12, 1922 in Alexander County, the son of the late, Marvin L. and Bessie Sharpe Lackey and grew up in Statesville, NC. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was called to active duty in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was recalled to service with the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Following his service to his country, he returned to UNC where he graduated. Following retirement from Lucent Technology, formerly known as Western Electric, he and his wife, Helen moved back to Statesville where he was a member of Kiwanis International and the Rotary Club. In 1996 he was named Statesville Man of the Year. That same year he carried the Olympic Torch in preparation for the Atlanta Summer Olympics. They moved to Winston-Salem where he was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sister, Rachel Grant; two other sisters, Hilda Hicks and Phyllis Clark; his stepdaughter, Laurie Ann Way, and his grandson, Scott Lackey. Survivors include his wife, Helen Langley Lackey of the home; three sons, William T. Lackey and wife, Dot of Blythewood, SC, Randall S. Lackey and wife, Abby of Chevy Chase, MD and Keith F. Lackey and wife, Sina of Waxhaw, NC; one daughter, Kim L. Honeycutt and husband, Walter of Lexington, NC; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one brother, James Lackey and wife, Becky of Shelby, NC. The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11:00 am at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Ford and Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 pm at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC. Memorials may be made to Kate B.
