William Matthew Herrin

Mr. William Matthew Herrin, 88, of Winston-Salem died Friday, August 23, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born February 16, 1925 in Stanley County, the son of the late, Adam Ellis and Flora Mae Mauney Herrin. Mr. Herrin was of the Baptist faith. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II in the European Theater. He retired from McLean Trucking Company following 33 years of service where he belonged to the Teamsters Local 391 Union. He loved NASCAR, pulling for Richard Petty, and the Atlanta Braves. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Polly, his daughter, Kay, his brother, J. E. and his sister, Lela Mae. Survivors include two sons, Ron Herrin and wife, Debbie and Tommy Herrin and one daughter, Trudy Higgins all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Michelle Robertson, Angela Goff, Matthew Herrin and Chris Herrin; five great grandsons, Chase Robertson, Tanner Goff, Cohen Herrin, Logan Goff and Fisher Herrin; three sisters, Mary Ella Matheson and husband, Forest of Taylorsville, Nancy Cook and husband, Wendell and Susan Levan and husband, Rodney of Statesville; and his favorite dog, Zoe. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Iredell Memorial Gardens in Statesville with Dr. Guy Hipp officiating with Full Military Honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
