Bill was also involved with a Bowman Gray racing team, helping mechanically and with the pit crew. He also loved fishing and teaching his children and grandchildren to fish. He owned a house at Emerald Isle, NC, until his wife's passing.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ellington Boyles; mother Myrl Boyles Weisner; brothers, Jack Boyles and Charles Weisner; and sisters, Dorothy Buelin and Sarah Frances Mabe.
