William Howard Benfield, Jr.

BENFIELD WALKERTOWN - William Howard Benfield, Jr. passed away September 22, 2010. He was born May 13, 1937 in Weaverville, North Carolina. He graduated from Walkertown High School in 1955 and served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1958. He attended Guilford College in 1962 and was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company until early retirement in 1990. Mr. Benfield was a resident of Walkertown, NC for forty-seven years. He was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed fishing, gardening, and was an avid camper. He was an active member of Love's United Methodist Church. He served the community as church youth leader and football coach of Walkertown Wolfpack Little League football team. He was passionate about attending his grandchildren's sporting events and is well known for not missing a single grandchild's game. He was preceded in death by his father, the Reverend William Howard Benfield, Sr.; and a brother, Johnny Kessler Benfield. Surviving is his devoted wife of 52 years, Jettie Ann Benfield; two daughters, Debra L. Benfield and Denise B. Yost; four grandchildren, Parker Yost, 28, Elisha Yost, 24, Ian Bolton, 21, and Colin Bolton, 17; his mother, Nelle Holton Benfield; a sister, Betty Jo Tyson; and a brother, Daniel H. Benfield. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 26 at Love's United Methodist Church with Pastor Sybil Parks and the Rev. James T. ""Chip"" Webb, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
