Mr. William Edward Kirby, Sr., 91, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, January 1, 2009 at his home. He was born December 20, 1917 in Wilson County, the son of the late Howard and Viola Watson Kirby. Mr. Kirby was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church and was retired owner of Made-Rite Sandwich Company. He served with the US Navy during World War II. He enjoyed hunting, farming and woodworking and was a longtime member of Cricket's Nest Craft Shop. In 1997 he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Sullivan Kirby. Survivors include one son, William Edward Kirby, Jr. and wife, Brenda; two daughters Sandra K. Burkhart and husband, Jim and Karen K. Hall and husband, Stuart; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one sister, Delores Durham and one brother, Leon Kirby. A military graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 PM at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Dr. John Franklin Howard, Sr. and Rev. Kari Howard officiating.
