Wayne Eugene Nifong

Wayne Eugene Nifong, 86, most recently of Staunton, VA, went to be with the Lord on December 14, 2022.

He was born on November 23, 1936, to Henry and Maude Sink Nifong in Davidson County, North Carolina. Wayne graduated from Arcadia High School in 1955, and North Carolina State University with a degree in Agriculture Science in 1959. He served in the National Guard from 1959 to 1966.

On April 10, 1965, he married his beloved wife Gayl Barbara Surridge. Together Wayne and Gayl were dairy farmers in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Penhook, Virginia. He milked his herd of around 100 cows twice a day for 52 years without complaining. Additionally, he worked as a rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service from 1986 to 1997.

Wayne was a lifelong learner who loved to teach others about the Word of God, history, and farming. His classroom was his milking parlor, where he would quiz his children on the fifty states, their capitals, the presidents, geography, and help them with their math homework. He loved cowboy movies, eating his wife's pumpkin pie, being outdoors, and being a dairy farmer. He valued people and took the time to listen to others. He was a mentor to young people throughout his lifetime and opened his home to many in need of a listening ear or a place to stay. He had an open, loving heart, and wanted each of his children to be happy.

Wayne was predeceased by his wife and a daughter, Susanne Nifong Baker (Benjamin). Surviving are his sister Carolyn Nifong Morgan of High Point and his brother Norman Nifong of Walnut Cove; four of his children, Douglas Nifong (Melanie) of Orfordville, Wisconsin, Jennifer Nifong Morris (Shawn) of Staunton, Virginia, Rebekah Nifong of Clemmons, Stephen Nifong (Rachel) of Gretna, Virginia; and six grandchildren: Mallory, Emily, Samantha, Abigayl, Silas, and Henry.

A memorial service will be held at Fraternity Church of the Brethren, Winston-Salem, NC, on December 20, at 11 AM. Immediately following the service he will be buried in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Fraternity Church of the Brethren, 3760 Fraternity Church Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
