Mr. Wayne Douglas Burge entered into the more immediate presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 3, 2025.
He was born in Winston-Salem on March 22, 1958, to John Kenneth and Emily Shaffner Burge. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving is his wife of almost 38 years, Tammy; his son Ryan Hamilton Burge,(Danielle); 3-year-old grandson, Weston Jack, of Longview, TX; and sister, Sandy Burge Disher of East Bend, NC.
Wayne graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1976, and from N. C. State University in 1980 with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering with Construction Option (CEC). Wayne was on the Dean’s List during his Senior year (1979 – 1980) at N.C. State University, and was inducted into the Civil Engineering Academic Honors Fraternity (Chi Epsilon). Upon graduation, he was invited to become a member of the national chapter of Chi Epsilon fraternal organization, where he was a member from 1980 – current.
His intention upon graduation was to work alongside his father and uncle in the family construction company, Floyd S. Burge Construction and Home Lumber Company; however, during Wayne’s senior year, he interviewed with an international construction company, Fluor Constructors, of Irvine, California for projects overseas. He was hired as a Field Construction Engineer for a Coal Gasification and Liquefaction project for South African Coal, Oil and Gas Company (SASOL) for a facility in Secunda, South Africa, until the project's completion in 1982. Immediately thereafter he was transferred to another project for Fluor Constructors as a Field Construction Engineer under a management contract for a Gas Gathering Project for Arabian American Oil Company (AARAMCO) in Berri, Saudi Arabia until project completion in 1984.
Upon return to the United States, Wayne worked in the commercial construction industry for various General Contractors. In 2005, Wayne began his own contract-basis company and acquired his General Contractors license, mainly as a professional qualifier for his contract work with other General Contractors, keeping his license active through 2024.
Wayne was an active member of Ardmore Moravian Church until 1986 when he moved his membership to Calvary Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, where he has been active in various roles of Outreach, Visitation, and Committees. In 1986 he met his wife Tammy, and always considered this to be a blessing from God – that God brought them together. In the summer of 2018, he was introduced by a church friend to a Christian-based community outreach organization, City Lights Ministry, and their bed-build program for children of disadvantaged families; which has held a special place in his heart ever since. In 2019, he participated in his first trip to eastern North Carolina with Baptists on Mission doing rebuild work after Hurricane Florence. In 2005, he served with a team in Mississippi to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Wayne’s back issues created limitations going forward regarding future trips, but he always desired to be involved with these efforts, when possible. In 2021, he was called upon to help organize a re-roof and overall repair of a home in dangerous condition for an elderly lady in Winston-Salem; whereby, he organized various contractors who were willing to offer their services at a discount.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. A private family graveside service will be held afterward. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 7, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to City Lights Ministry, 1600 Williamson St, Winston-Salem, NC 27107; or to a charity of the donors’ choice.
