Warren Keith Humphrey, 67 years old, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, after a lengthy battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Warren was born on September 13, 1954, in Greensboro, NC where he lived throughout his life. A graduate of Grimsley High School, he received an Associate of Arts degree from The Art Institute of Atlanta. After graduation from the Art Institute of Atlanta he served as an advertising artist for Rich’s Department stores in Atlanta, designing and creating images for ads in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He subsequently attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, College of Arts. Warren joined the family business, Southern Air Brake and Equipment Company, as a bookkeeper in 1978 until his retirement in 2013.
Warren was pre-deceased by his beloved mother Helen Redding Humphrey, sister Barbara Humphrey Lewis; best friend David “Chop” Thrower.
He leaves behind his father Arnold Neal Humphrey of Friends Homes Guilford College, Greensboro, NC; and brothers, Richard Humphrey and wife Dawn of Jamestown, NC and Clyde Humphrey and wife Debbie of Greensboro, NC; nieces Holly Humphrey, MD and husband Jan of Winston Salem, NC, Hailly Humphrey-Rutledge, AuD and husband Alex of Winston Salem, NC and Katie Bobbitt, MFA and husband Tyler of Cornelius, NC; nephew William Humphrey, MBA and wife Kristen of Atlanta, GA. Warren also leaves his beloved friends Betty Ann Wooten, Lou Hudson, Sallie McLarty, Brooks Truitt and many more.
Warren was a gifted artist, creating paintings using various mediums, charcoal sketches, and pastels as well as sculptures and pottery. His hand-signed artistry adorns the homes of his family and friends. As a lover of the arts, Warren also was a gifted poet with several of his writings being published. Warren’s constant companions through the years were his beloved cats. Many people admired Warren’s gardens which were abundantly filled with vegetables, flowering perennials, shrubs and bushes. He was proud of his garden and spent many hours nurturing his plants. Music played a significant role in Warren’s life, particularly recordings by his favorite artists Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris and the Beatles.
Warren’s family treasures the hand-made wrapping paper that he designed and painted each Christmas. One of Warren’s passions was the innovation and presentation of his culinary prowess. He was a gastronomic wizard as family and friends applauded his cooking, particularly his persimmon pudding which he pressed with a hand rice mill, then baked into the final delicious dessert.
The Humphrey family is extremely grateful for the many acts of kindness and love performed by Alex Rutledge. The family also extends sincere thanks to the caregivers at Memory Care of the Triad as well as Authoracare staff Sherita Williams LPN, Claudia Davis MSW LCSW-A, Rokisha Rover LPN, and Pastor Evan for their incredible patience, compassion and care for Warren in his final days.
