Walter Morris Hilton

Walter (""Red"") Morris Hilton passed away at his home on June 20, 2014. He was born on May 24, 1927 to Gaither Maude Hilton and Carrie Morris Hilton of Walkertown. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II. In the US Army Reserves he rose to the rank of Captain and was a senior detachment commander in the First Special Forces, co-founding a unit in Winston-Salem. He attended Wake Forest University and graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a B.S. in Applied Science. He retired from Western Electric, where he wrote a great number of COBOL programs as a systems analyst. The many interests of his life included collecting seashells with his wife Betty, military history, marksmanship, and skydiving. He enjoyed the Jumble, FreeCell, and going out to breakfast, where he would usually ""steal"" the check. He was an avid student of the Bible and read many translations cover to cover, filling the margins with notes. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he treated them to many trips to the beach. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 16 years, Betty Booze Hilton; two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his three daughters, Mary Ann Southern of Walnut Cove, Carole McGee of King, and Kelly Craven (Jon) of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Amy Ashley, Bill Southern (Beth), Jonathon Craven, and Emma C. Tucker (Matthew); five great grandchildren, Cameron Denny, Evan Ashley, Kate and Flynn Southern, Ada Tucker; a brother, Rudolph Hilton of Winston-Salem; numerous nieces and nephews including special nephew, William Mitchell (Beverlee) and their son Steven; and special niece, Anita McGowan. A graveside service will be held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24 with Pastor John Lord officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 23 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made at debra.org/donate, in hopes of finding a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a disease that has touched Walter's great-great nephew Jonah Williams. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
