Mr. Cook died July 29, 2013. He was born August 1, 1919 to the late James E. Cook and Lessie Veigh Everhart Cook. He graduated from South High School, June 1937 and attended Draughn Business College. Pete was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church, the Cook Bible Class, & the Senior Citizens Group (Oldest member of the Church). Pete resided in New Orleans and Slidell, LA for 41 years and retired from Dixie Highway Express in New Orleans. He and his late wife, Doris Ellington Cook were active members of Bayou Liberty Civic center in Slidell, LA and were elected King and Queen of the Mardi Gras Ball, which was dedicated to their 50th wedding anniversary. Pete was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, the former Doris Ellington Cook, a son Walter Wayne Cook, a brother James Cook, Jr. and sister Mabel Cook Houston and his parents. Survivors include his two daughters Brenda and husband James Watson of Jacksonville, AL and Carolyn Lenon of Meridian, MS, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Survivors also include his present wife of 14 years, Pauline Church Cook, three stepchildren, Sandra and Howard Sheets of Clemmons, Herman ""Sonny"" and Renee Johnson, Jr. of Waxhaw, NC, Pamela and Darrell Pulliam of Lexington, SC, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two brothers William R. Cook and wife, Jewel of Winston-Salem and Donald Cook of Greensboro, NC and several loving nieces and nephews. A visitation will be one hour before the service in the fellowship hall of New Friendship Baptist Church on Old Lexington Road. The body will lie in state one hour before the service lead by Rev. Chris Byrne on Wednesday July 31, 2013 at 2:00 PM. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Friendship Baptist Church Building fund at 4258 Old Lexington Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27107 or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff in the ICU at Forsyth Medical Center and the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for all their compassion and care they gave to Pete. Pete will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
