Kernersville -Mr. Walter Carter, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 5, 2022, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on May 13, 1944, in Pink Hill, NC to Herman B. and Florence Batchelor Carter. Walter was a veteran of the United States Army where he served from October 21, 1963 until October 27, 1969. In 2006, he retired from the Veterans Affairs Regional Office Loan Guaranty Division in Winston-Salem. Walter was a member of Union Cross Moravian Church. After his retirement, he worked at the Union Cross After School Care Center and he also worked for Dillard’s at Hanes Mall for several years. Walter enjoyed many different hobbies including fishing, traveling, and bowling. He loved old cars, collecting movies, and listening to music, especially classic rock. Walter also enjoyed volunteering. He never met a stranger and he loved to socialize and visit with friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather (Papa), great grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Floyd and one sister, Estelle.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Brenda Moran Carter; his son, Steven L. Hampton (wife, Kim); five grandchildren, Sydney Len Hampton Graffagnino (husband, Jason), Logan Michelle Hampton, Mitchell Gray Hampton (girlfriend, Isabel), Kate Rollins Clodfelter (husband, Tyler), and Luke Kristopher Rollins (girlfriend, Katelyn); and two great grandchildren, Hayden Graffagnino and Berkley Clodfelter.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Union Cross Moravian Church with Pastor Jeff Coppage officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Down Syndrome Association of Greater Winston-Salem at 305 W. 4th St. Suite #B11, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
