Mr. Wallace Reece Gordon Sr. of Pfafftown, NC passed away January 8, 2009. He was born July 17, 1922 in Stokes County, NC to Dolphus Lee and Myrtle Nunn Gordon. Mr. Gordon was raised in the shadow of Pilot Mountain in Pinnacle, NC where he worked with his parents, sisters, and brothers on the family tobacco farm and fertilizer business. It was here he developed his lifelong commitment to family, hard work, and honest dealings. In 1942 Mr. Gordon volunteered for the US Army and served as a squad leader in the 3313 Quartermaster Truck Company in England, France, and Germany. Cpl Gordon went ashore after D-Day and was among those who helped liberate the concentration camps. He returned safely to the States in March, 1946. He married his sweetheart, Edith Mae Key, in April, 1946 and they enjoyed over 62 years together as husband and wife. The newlyweds lived with his mother on the family farm until their daughter, Sharon Key Gordon, was born in 1947. The young family then moved to Winston-Salem, NC where sons Wallace Reece Gordon, Jr and Roger Dean Gordon were born in 1951 and 1954. Mr. Gordon went to work as a driver for Southern Greyhound in 1951 and safely carried his passengers over 2 million miles before he retired in 1976. During that time he also showed an entrepreneurial spirit operating a sandwich delivery as well as an exercise equipment business with his wife. Mr. Gordon was an independent and capable man. He worked on his own cars, poured his own driveway, and remodeled his own kitchen. He enjoyed boating and fishing at the NC coast and could play golf both left and right handed. For many years he raised huge summer gardens and took great joy in sharing the bounty with friends and family. He loved working in the kitchen and never used a recipe, only his taste and imagination, to create wonderful dishes for his guests.
