Virginia Phillips Wetzel

Virginia Hollandsworth Phillips Wetzel, 87, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. Virginia was born November 22, 1928 in Indian Valley, VA to Cephas William and Mettie Quesenberry Hollandsworth. She was a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and devoted Christian, who dearly loved her family. Virginia was an avid reader, a wonderful seamstress, and gardener allowing her to compliment her love of beautiful things. Virginia was very forward thinking, open-minded and had an enduring spirit.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by husbands, Archie W. Phillips (1949-1985) and Arthur M. Wetzel (1990-2007); brothers, Jett, Hurshel, Gurlie, and Cletis Hollandsworth; and sisters Opal Mitchell, Ocie Hollandsworth, Ila Mae Hollandsworth, Izola Slaughter, and Arlie Phillips.

Surviving are her daughters, Deborah McMillian (Grifford) of Belews Creek, Pat Roesel (Frank) of Kernersville and Nancy Witcher (Bill) of Lenoir; son, David B. Phillips (Dottie) of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Philip Roesel (Liz), Michelle Strickland (Jeremy), Erin Penley (Todd), Kerry Roesel, and Jenna Lahiff (Matt); five great-grandchildren, Bryson Penley, Garrett Penley, Ollie Lahiff, Tanner Penley, and Kodey Penley; special sisters-in-law, Hattie Wright and Hazel Phillips; and numerous extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 5, 2016 at Glenn View Baptist Church with Dr. Brad Wright and Rev. Johnny Gupton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 4, at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.

Virginia was a hard worker and a strong woman of faith who took pride in everything she did. She always had an optimistic view of life in the good and bad times. She worked in and around her home her entire life and despite declining health in her later years, she continued to keep house, raise a garden and put up food from her labors, and maintained hope for the future through her 87th year.
