Virginia "Ginny" Masten

Virginia ""Ginny"" Rutherford Masten received her angel wings on June 2, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ginny was born on July 24, 1933, in Coalwood, West Virginia, to the late Robert E. and Etta Worrell Rutherford. She is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Richard K. Masten, Sr.; two sons, Richard K. Masten, Jr. (Pat) and John David Masten of Winston-Salem and one daughter, Martha M. Broadbent (Bryan) of Wilmington, NC. Ginny (MeMe) is also survived by her four cherished grandchildren: Matthew Kyle and Thomas Kerns Masten and Harrison Lee and Andrew William Broadbent. In addition, she is survived by one sister, Sarah Ruth Beverly and one brother-in-law, F. David Masten, several nieces and nephews, two of which, were dear to her heart, Robert William and Jeffrey Wayne Masten. She was predeceased by one sister, Iris June Rutherford and one brother Robert Earl Rutherford. Graduating for Big Creek High School in 1951, she went to college at Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with a diploma degree of Nursing in 1954. Georgia Baptist School of Nursing would later become Mercer University, which Ginny was tickled to see beat Duke in the NCAA basketball playoffs of this year. Ginny practiced nursing in many different roles for 28 years at NC Baptist Hospital; from floor nursing to Administrative Supervisor the last 15 years of her career, where she interviewed and placed new staff throughout the hospital, developed and maintained a central scheduling system, wrote policy and procedures and developed and administered an annual budget for the Nursing Office. Her nursing practice was not only limited to the hospital, but she was always willing to help family, friends, neighbors, and strangers throughout her life. With an infectious smile and friendly personality, Ginny knew no strangers. Some of her most enjoyable activities included spending time with her family; especially cooking one of her wonderful meals for them. Not only was she an avid gardener, but she also loved to can her own vegetables, an art she learned from her mother and sister, Ruth. Throughout her earthly journey, Ginny lived her life through her faith in the Lord. Even when she faced her last trial with cancer, she would often say, ""I know the Lord is with me and I'll be alright"". ""Yea, though I walk through the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me"" (Psalms 23:4). Ginny would not want you to grieve because her soul has been set free, but instead celebrate and remember the times you have shared. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Hospice Care Team (Rachel, Brenda, and Tina), who helped to comfort our Mother during her last few months with us. In addition, the family would like to thank Dr. Susan Hines and her staff for the supportive and compassionate care received throughout her illness. . A memorial service to celebrate Ginny's life will be held on Saturday, June 7, at 2:00pm at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance officiated by Mr. James Hash. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
