Virgil Conrad Atwood

Virgil Conrad Atwood, Jr., 87 of Winston-Salem, passed away December 7, 2011. Bub, as he was known to most, was born on October 24, 1924 to Bessie and Virgil Atwood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jesse; sisters, Helen, Juanita, and Margareet; and a grandson, Shawn. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Stella Moore Atwood of the home; son, Michael Atwood and wife Ginger of Vero Beach, Florida; son, Tim Atwood and wife DeNeille of Clemmons; grandson, Chandler Atwood and wife Andrea of United States Air Force, Dayton, Ohio; grandson, Ryan Atwood of Mooresville; grandson, Ryan Gragg of Charlotte; granddaughter, Alexis Gragg of Winston-Salem; great grandchildren, Kadence and Bryton Atwood; and a brother, Tom Atwood. Bub loved growing up in the Vienna area and graduated from Old Town High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he was awarded 5 battle stars for his service in the Pacific. After the war he returned home and enjoyed a career with the Western Electric Company, where he retired as an Industrial Engineer with 30 years of service. Bub was a faithful member of Pine Chapel Moravian Church along with his wife Stella. Bub was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and playing ball. He taught his sons many of life's lessons on the ball field and enjoyed coaching many other boys in the early years of South Little League. After retirement he thoroughly enjoyed being with his grandchildren. Whether it was throwing rocks in the river, working in the garden, or watching them play ball, he always loved being with his boys. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 10, at Pine Chapel Moravian Church with the Reverend James Demby and the Reverend Norwood Green officiating. Burial will follow at Olivet Moravian Church graveyard. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Chapel Moravian Church, 324 Goldfloss Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
