Mr. Vestal J. Potts, 81, of Advance passed away Friday, January 11, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Potts was born on March 9, 1931 to Solomon Franklin and Ida Jane Hendrix Potts. He was a very active member of Advance Baptist Church, participating on many committees, teaching Sunday school, and acting as the church secretary. Mr. Potts was inducted into the North Carolina Softball ASA Hall of Fame, as well as the Davie County High School Hall of Fame for his coaching abilities. He acted as the Recreation Director for both Davie and Forsyth counties and hosted many softball tournaments. The gymnasium at Shady Grove was dedicated to Mr. Potts in 2002. He was a lifelong teacher, mentor, and coach. Mr. Potts enjoyed working with his flowers and loved being outdoors. He loved arts and crafts and was the owner of Prints-n-Things in Advance. He enjoyed eating at Jimmy the Greeks and truly loved people and the company of others. He will be missed by many. Mr. Potts was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; six sisters; and a special friend of over 50 years, Lucy Ford Phelps. He is survived by his brother, Robert ""Bo"" Potts of Advance; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 am Monday, January 14, 2013 at Advance First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney Hellard officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm Sunday evening at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. The family would like to extend a special thanks to his devoted friend, Jim Jones.
