Vernon Mitchell Smith

Mr. Vernon Mitchell Smith, 88, passed away on August 5, 2009, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on January 21, 1921 in Winston-Salem to the late Walter and Mary Mitchell Smith. Vernon was raised in the Waughtown community and attended Forest Park Elementary and Gray High School. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force before the United States entered WWII and served in the U.S. Navy prior to and after being in the RCAF and he was also a retired postal worker. He is survived by his wife, Arlene Miller Smith of the home; one son, Michael Ray Smith and wife Betty of Huntington Beach, CA, and one grandson, Sam Mitchell Smith and wife Anna of Camarillo, CA, and Mr. Smith's two poodles, Dolly and Andy. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by Rev. Samuel Craven. Memorials may be made to the Forsyth Humane Society, P.O.
