Mr. Vernon Courtney Carlton, Jr., 83, of 3955 Philpark Drive, Winston-Salem, passed away on April 17, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Vernon was born in Newberry, SC to Vernon C. Carlton, Sr., and Gladys Havird Carlton. At Newberry High School, he played on the SC All State football team. He graduated from Clemson University where he attended under a full football scholarship and played in the 1957 Orange Bowl under Coach Frank Howard. Following his graduation, he joined the US Army and became a Ranger. In 1964, he moved to Winston-Salem from Savannah, GA and went to work for Clyde Bradshaw at Weaver Fertilizer, who became his friend and mentor. He later bought the business and became the owner and president of Weaver Fertilizer. Mr. Carlton was a very active member of Augsburg Lutheran Church since 1970. He served on numerous committees including president of the congregation counsel, several call committees and the finance committee for many years. He also served on the board of Forsyth Prison Ministry for several decades. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and caring friend to many. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Roseann Carlton McPhaul and brothers-in-law, Sam H. McPhaul and Harry Brigham. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen Carlton; two daughters, Mary Caye Wagg Hauser of Winston-Salem and Jennifer Lynn Carlton (and Emanuele Magnani) of Raleigh; one son, Vernon Courtney Carlton, III of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Ashley Lane Wagg and Nicholas Taylor Wagg; a sister, Benny Lou Carlton Brigham of Boone; a brother, Bobby Carlton (Laura) of Lake Murray, SC; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Augsburg Lutheran Church with Pastor Daniel Pugh officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center at the church.
