VELMA IRENE CRANFIELD DICKERSON passed away on February 25, 2011 at Grace Healthcare in Winston-Salem . She was born on July 22, 1919 in Cleveland , Tennessee to Louis Cranfield and Lillie Leamon Cranfield. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Walter Aaron Dickerson, in 1989. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Ann (Charles) Morrison of Clemmons; and her son, Jerry Walter (Sylvia) Dickerson of Houston, Texas. A resident of North Wilkesboro since 1936, she worked at Wilkes Hosiery Mill, Key City Furniture Company and retired from Modern Globe. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro, and loved caring for nursery-age children. Velma was an accomplished seamstress, making many clothes for herself and her daughter, and draperies for herself and other people. She also enjoyed cooking and needlework, and passed these interests on to her daughter. For the past 3 years Velma had lived at the Elms at Tanglewood, Bermuda Commons Nursing Home in Advance, and Grace Healthcare in Winston-Salem . The family wishes to extend extreme gratitude to her most recent primary caregivers at Grace Healthcare: Melissa Wilson, Sheri Bennett, Cheryl Smith, Theresa Selhoff, Sharon Brim, and Cora Cortez, as well as to many others. A visitation will be held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The Rev. Gary Byrum from Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem will officiate at the service at the Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in North Wilkesboro at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 3, 2011.
