Mr. Vance Eugene ""Gene"" Lanier, Sr., 81, of Advance passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born December 28, 1930 in Davie County to Jacob Edward and Grace Hunter Lanier. Mr. Lanier was employed with Gravely Tractor for 21 years and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church since 1961. Gene loved working in his garden and being outside. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a humble and caring man who greatly loved his family. He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Darren Lanier and a sister, Margie Lanier Davidson. Surviving are his wife Helen Laird Lanier of the home; a daughter, Annette Nice and husband Jerry of Franklin, VA and their daughter, Stephanie; a son, Vance Lanier and wife Phyllis of Kernersville and their son, Blake and daughter Rachel; two brothers, Tommy Lanier of Anchorage, AK and Larry Lanier and wife Patsy of Advance; a sister, Ethel Anderson of Mocksville and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2012 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Dr. Barry Lemons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 321 Redland Rd., Advance, NC 27006.
