Valia Hutchins Kane died peacefully at home in Winston-Salem surrounded by her family on Jan 19th at 89 years of age. She was born Oct 13, 1925 to Ernest and Maude Hutchins in Waughtown where her father opened the 1st Esso gas station. She is survived by her husband: Clifton B (Rudy) Kane Jr, her daughter: Kay F Davis and Robert B. Byrum of Raleigh, her son: Frederick (Rick) J. Felker III and Patricia (Patty) W. Felker of Durham, her 4 grandchildren: Ryan, Tyler, Alex, and Christine, and her 4 great grandchildren: Aiyanna, Brian Jr, Jack, and Ella. Valia attended Gray High School and was active in sports especially tennis and basketball and was an honor student. She then attended Catawba College and went to work for RJ Reynolds as an executive secretary for Mr. Charlie Frank Benbow. She was later promoted to Regional Credit Manager as one of the first women in RJR management. She retired in 1982 and began her new phase of life traveling with her husband as member of the Carolina's Unit of NC Airstream Club. They attended Windjammer rallies in Florida in the winter months and Airstream rallies all over the US in the summer months ending up in Laurel Springs at Miller's Campground until the fall. Valia was an excellent artist painting mostly in acrylics and became accomplished at any project she decided to try. Valia was active in her church at Fries Moravian and played an E flat alto in the band with Rudy at trumpet at Easter services, memorials, and concerts. Her nickname and email address became âEveryOtherNote'. She is preceded in death by her former husband, Frederick J Felker, Jr, her sisters, Carol H Prescott, Joyce H Reid, and her brother, Erle T Hutchins. The family also expresses a special thanks to Amanda, Kay, and Christine who were Valia's devoted caregivers. Hayworth-Miller, 3315 Silas Creek Pky, 27103 is handling funeral preparations. Memorials may be made in her name to Fries Memorial Moravian Church, 251 Hawthorne Road NW, 27104. Funeral Services will be held at Fries at 3pm on Sunday, Jan 25th followed by burial in God's Acre, Old Salem.
