Mr. V. Richard ""Dick"" Nelson, 93, of Winston-Salem died Friday, April 17, 2009 at The Oaks at Forsyth. He was born April 4, 1916 in Erie, Pa. to Edwin R.and Esther Johnson Nelson. He worked for 45 years to the day at Champion Industries and had been active in Youth for Christ and Gideon's International. His passion was song leading. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church where he served as deacon and superintendent of the Young Peoples Dept. He was preceded in death by brothers Jeffrey, Robert, Clarence and Clyde Nelson and sister Hazel Smith. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Mary Elizabeth ""Bobbie"" Nelson; a son, Richard D. Nelson (Lillian), of Charlotte; two daughters, Shirley V. Marzari of Reading, PA. and Barbara N. (Phillip) Childress of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Edwin R. Nelson, Jr. (Rose) and William Nelson; two sisters, Isolene Capell and Mercedes Nelson all of Erie, PA.; four grandchildren, Melissa (Lance) Meacham of Centenniel, CO, Jeanne (Lance) E. Richter of Apex, NC, Tim (Mindy) Childress of Greensboro, NC, and Stephanie G. Childress of Winston-Salem; and six great-grandchildren Jacob and Luke Meacham, Benjamin, Joseph and Alexis Richter and Benjamin Childress. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Howard Wilburn officiating. Entombment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Piedmont Baptist College, Alzheimer's Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
