WINSTON-SALEM - Ursula Scheffer Benson, 79, passed away Wednesday, July 27, after a long and protracted illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at Augsburg Lutheran Church with the vicar Angela Jackson presiding. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. A native of Berlin, Germany, Mrs. Benson was a witness to the tumultuous end of the Second World War in 1945. As a young girl, she experienced the Allied bombing of Berlin, and the intense final battle for the city and the brutal Soviet occupation after Germany's surrender. Blessed with an indomitable spirit, Mrs. Benson endured the suffering and privations of her countrymen amidst the rubble of post-war Berlin and its subsequent blockade by the Soviets in 1948 that prompted the city's relief during the Allied Berlin Airlift, and its ultimate division into Allied and Soviet zones with the creation of West and East Germany in 1949. Mrs. Benson eventually immigrated to the United States in 1952. One of the proudest moments of her life occurred when she attained American citizenship in 2000. A graduate of Winston-Salem State University, Mrs. Benson had a distinguished 24-year career as a Psychiatric Registered Nurse at N.C. Baptist Hospital. She was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church and was very active in her faith. A true German romantic, Mrs. Benson possessed a fierce passion for fine art, history and classical music. She enthusiastically personified the German notion of Kinder, Ké¼che, Kirche (Children, Kitchen and Church) as a compassionate and giving individual who left lasting impressions with nearly everyone she encountered. Mrs. Benson was exceptionally devoted to her family and proud of its heritage. She was preceded in death by her parents, Friedrich Scheffer and Margarete Brombach. Mrs. Benson is survived by her husband, George Benson, her sons Mike Knox, Fred, Olav and Leif Benson, daughters Margarete Juliana and Stephanie Black, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 29, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Mrs. Benson's charity, The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, at http://www.ifcj.org.
