Mr. Ulysses ""Grant"" Lawrence, 91, of Winston-Salem went home to be with his Lord Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born October 31, 1917 in Wilkes County to William Filmore and Lillie Gregory Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII in the Pacific. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 22 years of service. He loved to play golf with his buddies at Maple Leaf Golf Course. He was a former member of Urban Street Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon for many years. Surviving are his wife, Pauline Mahaffey Lawrence; one son, Hal Lawrence and wife Ann; one daughter, Hilda L. Riffle and husband Charles, all of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Debbie Gibbons and husband Randy, Jeff Lawrence and wife Melissa, and Joey Riffle and wife Traci; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Maude Poteat and Eva Gregory, both of North Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 8 at Faith Missionary Alliance Church with the Rev. Michael Gates and Dr. Billy Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
