Francis Tyler Morgan Jr., 92, of Winston-Salem, passed away at his home on August 20, 2021. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Mary Louise Morgan, whom he met when she was only 15 years old, sons James of Winston-Salem, Wayne (Patty) of Clemmons, and Tim (Denise) of Raleigh, grandchildren Andrew, Madeline, Scott, Molly, Olivia, Caroline, and Isabelle, and great-grandchild Louisa.
Tyler was born on July 19, 1929 in Chattanooga, TN to Francis Tyler Morgan and Maude Jane Moore Morgan, who died shortly after his birth. He was raised by his grandmother, Daisy Tyler Morgan, and attended Chattanooga High and Second Presbyterian Church, where he met lifelong friends who vacationed together into their 80’s. At age 17, Tyler enlisted in the military during his senior year of high school and was proud to be a career member of the United States Marine Corps, where he served for 30 years, rising to the rank of Captain. He served tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam, and worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington DC during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After retiring from the Marines in 1974, he worked for the Department of Veteran Affairs until his second retirement in 1997, and later for Womble Carlyle on the Bailey settlement. He was also awarded the title of Ambassador in The North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine Society.
Tyler was an excellent tennis player and a member of the All-Marine team that played against other branches of the armed services. He was also a lifelong Presbyterian, serving as a deacon and elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Havelock, NC, and since 1978 was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem, where as a greeter he was known for his dapper, brightly colored sports jackets. Tyler was a loyal, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who cherished his family deeply. For years he proudly attended their many recitals, school programs, sporting events, and graduations, and always delighted in a visit as they grew older. Tyler was strong in his faith and put his trust in God. We are comforted by the belief that he was welcomed into the arms of his loving Savior with a “Well done, good and faithful servant.” He was loved dearly by his family and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held 1pm Saturday, August 28, 2021, in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Cherry Street, Winston-Salem, NC.
Flowers will be accepted or a donation to First Presbyterian Church.
