Tommye Elizabeth Cartner Campbell

Tommye Cartner Campbell, 89, has gone to be with the Lord. She passed away peacefully during the night of Sunday, October 29, 2023, under the care of the wonderful staff at Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC.

Tommye was born on May 23, 1934, in Harmony, NC, to the late William Ray Cartner and Robert Nellie Jones Cartner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William Ray Jr “Pap”, Richard Neil “Sonny”, Robert Eugene “Gene”, and Kenneth Perry “Shorty”; her sisters, Elton, Betty “Jim”, and Claire “Matt”; and her granddaughter, Chelsea Burnette Szerelmey. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Henry Campbell; daughters, Misty Burnette (Mike) and Karen Smith; son, Lee Campbell (Beth); grandsons, Brian Burnette (Monica), Justin Campbell, and Jacob Campbell; great-grandson, Weston Szerelmey; and sister, Bobbie Jo Sees (John).

Tommye was an incredibly warm and loving person, always giving selflessly to others. Her love of life was surpassed only by her love of family. She left her childhood home, a dairy farm in Harmony, after graduating from high school and moved to Winston-Salem, where she was employed at Western Electric. She married Henry, the love of her life, then left the workforce to take care of their children. Once all three were in school, she restarted her professional career at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry, providing invaluable editorial assistance to its faculty and students. A country girl at heart, she enjoyed working in her garden and cooking comfort foods. She was kind, generous with both her time and her talents, and devoted her life to making others happy.

A graveside service will be held 2PM Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Clarksbury Methodist Church in Harmony, Pastor Charlie Curtis officiating. Arrangements are by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Homes in Winston-Salem.
