Mr. Tommy Edison Flippin, 83, of Rural Hall, passed away Sunday, September 28 at Baptist Medical Center from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. Tommy was born on February 3, 1925 in Capella, NC, son of the late James Arthur Flippin and Bertha Jane Bennett Flippin. The Flippin family took residence in Rural Hall shortly after Tommy's birth. Mr. Flippin proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the US Army. After returning home, Tommy worked at Forest Hill Lumber Company for many years before starting his own home building business, which he retired from in 2004. Tommy was extremely active in his community through the Lions Club, attaining over 30 years of perfect attendance with the Forsyth Lions Club and later the Rural Hall Area Lions, of which he was a founding member. In 1992, Mr. Flippin was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest Lions Club honor. Tommy is preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Lucille Whitfield Flippin. Tommy is survived by his three children, Rhonda Wood and husband Craig of Suffolk, VA; Tommy Michael Flippin and wife Tammy of Elkin; Darrel Flippin and wife Cindy of Rural Hall; three grandchildren, Brian Flippin and wife Jessica of King; Kristen Nickles and husband Robbie of Winston-Salem; Derrick Flippin of Rural Hall; three great grandchildren, Tyler, McKayla and Brianna Flippin of King; sister Rhuemelle F. Tuttle of Rural Hall; and two special nephews, A.B. Whitfield of Winston-Salem and Jimmy Shamel of King. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall on Thursday, October 2, and at other times at his sons home, Darrel Flippin 295 Brittany Rd. in Rural Hall. A service will be conducted at The First Baptist Church in Rural Hall, 7105 Broad St., at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 3. with Rev. Grady Dickens and Rev. Keith MeKinney officiating In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victory Junction Gang Camp, one of Mr. Flippin's favorite charities, at 4500 Adam's Way, Randleman, NC 27317 or victoryjunction.org.
