Thurmond Griffith, Sr.

Mr. Thurmond L. Griffith, Sr. (Paw), 93, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at his home. He was the son of Robert A. and Deamie Beck Griffith. On May 11, 1935, he married Grace Griffith Griffith who preceded him in death on February 16, 1998 after 63 years of marriage. Thurmond was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church all of his life. He was active in all church areas, serving as church treasurer, two building committees, church trustee, chief usher for 52 years, and in 1996 was chosen Layman of the Year. He was employed by B.F. Huntley Furniture Company for eleven years and Winston Printing Company for thirty-five years, retiring in 1982 as a supervisor. He was a volunteer fireman in the Clemmons and South Fork Fire Departments, and was volunteer fireman of Forsyth County in 1974. He was also a charter member of Jonestown Civic Club, having helped organize it in 1957. He served as president five different times and treasurer for fifteen years. He was also active on all other committees through the years. After retiring, his hobbies were gardening and fishing at Atlantic Beach, NC. He loved sharing his garden produce with everyone he knew and also strangers. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Griffith; two sisters, Margaret Anderson and Alice Crater; a brother-in-law, John Williams; and a sister-in-law, Opal Griffith. Surviving are his daughter, Janet G. Hunter and husband Larry; a son, T.L. Griffith, Jr. and wife Peggy; two granddaughters, Renee G. Aldridge and husband Larry, Brandi Hunter Wright and husband Chris; one grandson, Dustin T. Hunter; two great grandsons, Dwayne Hunter and Austin Hunter of Mocksville; one sister, Dorothy Williams; four brothers, Harold Griffith and wife Lola, Ralph Griffith and wife Carolyn, Wesley Griffith, and Ernest Griffith and wife Brenda; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Griffith; a host of friends, neighbors and family, and a special friend, Kathleen V. Sprinkle. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 14 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Chaplain Randy Hillman and Dr. Steve Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, March 13 at the funeral home. .
