Mrs. Thomasine “Tommie” Carter Pierce Norman, 88, of Winston-Salem was escorted by angels into the garden of eternal life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2022. Thomasine was born in Davie County to the late Roy Lee Carter and Lucille Sidden Carter on June 3, 1934.
Thomasine was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church. She retired from AT&T (formerly Western Electric) with 36 years of service. After retirement she worked part time as a Tour Guide at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for a few years. She also served as Director of the Local CWA Retirees which included coordinating trips and giving back to the community by providing birthday parties for the elderly at numerous nursing home facilities.
Thomasine enjoyed playing the piano, singing, and dancing. She was always full of life. In fact, she sang with the “King Hillbillies” in the annual Christmas Parades throughout surrounding counties. She never met a stranger; she would talk and share her love and kindness through her bubbling personality with everyone who crossed her path. This was especially true in her display of goodness to the elderly and children. Her beautiful smile was contagious and comforting to all. Several years Thomasine and her husband, Vernon, traveled across the United States and into various regions fulfilling their retirement with fun and adventure! Another part of her life was cooking all those delicious Sunday dinners for her family (especially those homemade apple pies), and surrounding her home with gorgeous flowers and plants both inside and out. She definitely had a green thumb! But the most important role in her life was being a mother and grandmother. She dearly loved her family and they dearly loved her in return! She even loved all her furry grandbabies and spoiled them as well.
Along with her parents, Thomasine was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Gray Norman; her step daughter, Susan Vickers; step grandson, Seth Morgan; her previous husband, T. O. Pierce, Jr.; son, Gray Pierce; brothers Hobert Carter and William (Bill) Carter; and a sister, Irilla Carter Cornatzer. She is survived by her children Deborah Larrimore (Tommy); Bryan Pierce (Kathy); and Dexter Pierce (Becky) two grandchildren, Spencer Pierce; Stephanie Prevette (Austin) and one great grandchild, Adelyn Prevette; her stepchildren Cindy Wilhoit (Tom); and Carla Morgan; along with step grandchildren, Krista Plowman (Shane); Paul Wilhoit (Sherry); Zach Morgan; Noah Morgan; Thompson Vickers; and four step great grandchildren; her nieces and nephews Dennis Carter; David Carter; Jeff Carter; Lori Gunter; Lucille Hartman; H. L. Carter; Chris Cornatzer; and Shane Cornatzer.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 3250 High Point Road, Winston-Salem, with Rev. Darrell Hall officiating. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. before the service.
