Thomas Earl Sturgill

Thomas “Tom” Earl Sturgill, age 84, of Winston-Salem, NC passed at Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home on November 6, 2023.  Tom was born in Avery County NC to parents, Earl and Mildred Sturgill.  Tom graduated from Newland High School, Lees McRae College and attended Appalachian State University.  Tom was a member of the United States Army, a Trooper with the State Highway Patrol and retired from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation with over 30 years of service.  Tom received the “Medal of Valor” and was presented the “Order of Long Leaf Pine” award for his service.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Joseph Sturgill, his nephew “Little” Joe Sturgill, and his stepson, Christian Stoltz.

Surviving are his sons, John Sturgill (Connie) and Brian Sturgill; stepdaughter, Wendy Stoltz; brother, John Sturgill; two grandsons, Clayton and Harrison Sturgill; step grandsons, Nick Tantanella and Christian Stoltz; step granddaughter, Delaney Stoltz; step great-grandchildren, Rocco and Sofia Tantanella; and nephew, Charlie Sturgill.  Tom was also survived by his dear friend, Linda Sturgill.

A funeral service will be held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Winston Salem on Thursday, November 9^, 2023, at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside committal will be held the following day at Tanglewood Cemetery in Linville, NC at 11:00 AM. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tanglewood Cemetery or Pinedale Christian Church, 3395 Peters Creek Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
