SMITH - KING Mr. Thomas McLean ""Mac"" Smith passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 20, 1922 in Forsyth County to the late Annie Cline Smith and Oscar Sandy Smith. Mr. Smith proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and later retired from AT&T. He was a faithful member of Freedom Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Thomas G. Smith; two sisters, Martha Kiger and Bonnie Goad; and an infant brother, Carl Smith. Surviving are his devoted wife of 63 years, Ina Gordon Smith; two daughters, Janet Griffin (Terry) of Rural Hall and Susan Whiteheart of King; one son, David Smith (Karen) of Winston-Salem; daughter-in-law, Linda Smith; nine grandchildren, Christy Hartgrove (Mark), Shannon Whiteheart, Jonathan Whiteheart, Tina Hamilton (Eddie), Wayne Griffin (Valerie), Laura Smith, Joshua Smith (Lauren), Jennifer Wakim (Abe), and Justin Smith; eight great-grandchildren, Tia, Dalton, Savannah, Braden, Falcon, Wyat, Nathan, and Nate Conley; one great, great-granddaughter, Clover Jade; one sister, Melinda Dellert (Jim); one brother, Manley Smith; special in-laws, Reba Grogan, Ronald & Ruth Gordon, and Clara & Flake Adkins; and also many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2012 at Freedom Baptist Church with Pastor Jon White, the Rev. J.T. Byerly and the Rev. Terry Brandon officiating. The body will lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Rural Hall Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 1 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
