Thomas Cleveland Mills

Thomas Cleveland Mills, 90, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Woltz hospice Home. Mr. Mills was born November 22, 1925 in Surry County to the late Lannie T. and Nannie Lou Mills. He was a long time telephone company employee, starting in 1946 at Central Telephone Company in Mt. Airy, NC. He went to work at Southern Bell Communications, retiring in 1983. Later, he joined Alltel Communications where he worked until 1996. He has worked for various telephone contractors, most recently at ALLTEL in Mooresville, NC until 2005. He served on the board of directors for Joy Ranch, a children's home near Hillsville, VA and on the board of the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission as well. Tom Served in the United States Navy during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. He was a faithful member of Marshall Baptist Church for many years and served in many capacities. He was a Sunday School teacher for various classes, including going out to several of the local rest homes. In addition, he served on the deacon board. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lannie T. and Nannie Lou Mills; one brother, Lannie Jr. who was killed in action during World War II, and a sister Irene Shockley (Clifford). He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Younger Mills; son, Lannie D. Mills (Kathy) of Mooresville; daughter, Lynn Mills Myers (Jim) of Welcome; two grandchildren, Jessica Mills Holmes (JR) of Raleigh, John Mills of Mooresville; great-grandchild, Elijah Thomas Holmes, of Raleigh; two sisters, Betsy Mills Mcraw , and Edith Mills Brown of Mt. Airy. Special friends include Donnie Otis and Connie Margaret Bullins of Germanton. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 PM Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Marshall Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with Rev. John Holmes officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
