Thomas C. McDowell, Jr.

Mr. Thomas Courtney McDowell, Jr., 95, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017.

Tom was born July 15, 1921 in Herd County, GA to Thomas McDowell, Sr. and Janie Williams McDowell. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He retired from Sara Lee Corporation with 43 years of service and was a member of Hanes United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his son, Thomas ""Tommy"" McDowell III, sisters, Thelma Hattaway, Carolyn Hicks, and Louise Wiggins, and brothers, Raymond, Harvey, Joe, and Milton McDowell.

Tom is survived by his wife of 70 years, Charlene Miller McDowell; children, Joe McDowell and wife Lynell, Chris McDowell and wife Anne, and Janie Yarboro and husband Ken; daughter in law, Donna McDowell; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 1 pm at Hanes United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob McLeod and Rev. Robert Hutchens officiating. Interment will follow the service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends Friday, March 24, 2017 from 6 - 8 pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
