Mr. Thomas (Tommy) Wayne Laird, 80, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on February 10th, 1943, in Forsyth County to the late George Thomas Laird and Thelma Margaret Howard Laird.
Tommy grew up in the close-knit Hanes Town community of Winston Salem, a place that held a special spot in his heart. He maintained strong connections with his childhood friends, regularly participating in yearly reunions and gatherings to keep in touch. During his youth, he cherished moments of bonding with his brother Vernon through countless hours of fishing. Engaging with nature was a passion for Tommy, as he delighted in outdoor activities such as hunting and trapping. Additionally, his love for Nascar racing was evident, often spending Sunday afternoons cheering for his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt.
After graduating from Southwest High School, Tommy embarked on his professional journey at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, where he demonstrated an unwavering commitment until his early retirement at the age of 55. Known for his impeccable work ethic, he never once arrived late or missed a day of work.
Throughout his formative years, he found solace and guidance in the Hanes Baptist Church, where he exchanged vows with his late beloved wife of 58 years, Glenda Kimmer Laird. Tommy and Glenda were childhood neighbors in Hanes Town, where she first caught his eye. Together, they built a life centered around their two daughters, Robin Laird Chaves and Krista Laird Lane. Instilling strong Christian values within his family, Tommy raised his daughters in the Baptist faith, imparting them with a sense of devotion and love.
Tommy, or "Papi" as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren, cherished every moment with his daughters, granddaughters, and great-grandsons, dedicating his undivided attention and affection to each one of them. Not only a pillar of support for his family, but also a friend to many, he was recognized for his willingness to assist anyone in need. His dedication extended even to his beloved dogs, Chelsea and Nikki, whom he cared for deeply.
A man of community and companionship, Tommy fostered cherished relationships with those around him, particularly at his favorite lunch spot, West Town Restaurant, where his presence was a daily delight. His circle of friends and acquaintances took comfort in his presence, especially following the passing of his dear wife.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Robin Chaves and Krista Lane, both residing in Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Katherine Loper (Travis), Sarah Lane Goodrich (Isaiah), Grace Chaves, Olivia Chaves, and Anna Chaves; along with two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Jackson Loper.
A private commemoration of Tommy's life will be held with immediate family. For those wishing to reach out, the family can be contacted at the residence of Robin Chaves.
Tommy's legacy of kindness, dedication, and unwavering love will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
