Thomas Campbell Karnes, Jr., 90, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Karnes was born January 7, 1921, in Covington, Virginia, to the late Thomas Campbell Karnes, Sr. and Lucy Gilley Kincaid Karnes. Tom was a 1942 graduate of Georgia Tech University with an engineering degree and also was a member of the ROTC program while studying at the university. Immediately after graduation, Tom entered the US Army Air Corps and served as a captain during WWII in the China Burma India Theatre. Following the war, he married Dr. Lucia Rooney Karnes of Decatur, Ga., in 1946. He was senior engineer for Bahnson Corporation for over 40 years. Tom was an avid golfer and was a member of Forsyth Country Club for over 50 years. He was a Wake Forest and Georgia Tech fan and loved nature, animals, baseball, and reading. Tom also traveled around the world twice. He was a passionate student of history, especially the Civil War. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a son, T. Campbell Karnes, III, and a daughter-in-law, Lydia Winslow Karnes. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Dr. Lucia R. Karnes; daughter, Eleanore Karnes Pabarue and husband, Jim, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons, Timothy R. Karnes of Clemmons, NC. and Charles Karnes of Chapel Hill, NC; four grandchildren, Kathryn and Jay Pabarue of Philadelphia and Lucia W. Karnes and Elizabeth Karnes of Charleston, SC.
